Georgian Hair Mourning Bracelet, Engraved 1792

Date made ca. 1792
Origin England, probably
Materials Human hair, Gold, unmarked, Seed pearls, Glass
Context

A bracelet of plaited brown hair with gold terminals and a clasp set with seed pearls around a panel of woven hair under glass, the reverse engraved for a woman named May who died in September 1792 at seventy-seven.

Bracelets like this were made from the hair of the person mourned and worn by someone who had lost her, and this one still carries her name.
