les-confessions-de-s-augustin-translated-by-arnauld-dandilly-1669
Les Confessions de S. Augustin, Arnauld d'Andilly's translation, Paris, later seventeenth century

St. Augustine's Confessions in French, in the translation Robert Arnauld d'Andilly made after retiring to Port-Royal des Champs, the abbey at the centre of the Jansenist argument. This is an original devotional book from the Paris press that served the abbey, sold with its faults described.

D'Andilly's version came out in 1649 and stayed the standard French Confessions for generations. It is an adaptation as much as a translation, laid out with chapter titles, summaries and headings so it could be read in pieces. This copy carries the Avis au lecteur, the table of chapters and the full thirteen books.

The edition

Les Confessions de S. Augustin, traduites en francois par Arnauld d'Andilly. Paris, Pierre Le Petit. The title page is lacking, but all hallmarks of the book indicate that the era of later 1600s is correct.

Though the title page is missing, it carries a hand-written replacement with provenance from two later owners: a nineteenth-century ink note on the flyleaf that lays out in detail the imprint and a life of the printer, and a pencil note repeating it.

We have found no record of a Le Petit printing in 1669; Le Petit issued the translation in 1659 and 1675, and this copy's make-up matches the 1675. Small duodecimo, text running past page 560, table before the text.

The copy

The binding is a later full calf, probably eighteenth century, spine gilt in compartments with fleurons and lettered CONFESS DE S AUGUSTI, combed marbled pastedowns. Leather has been lost at both spine ends and all four corners, boards scuffed through, spine label gone. Text toned with foxing to the opening leaves. Printed bookplate of a Commandant Farges on the front pastedown.

Condition graded As found.
